The importance of digestion:
Have you heard the phrase “you are what you eat?”
While that may be true, I think we should take it a step further:
We are what we digest.
We are only as good as the food we can actually use.
We can eat the highest quality food all the time but not fully benefit from them if our digestion is out of whack.
Eat all the foods with B vitamins for energy.
Zinc for immune health.
But we won’t get more energy or improve our immune system if we can’t actually use the B vitamins or zinc!
For hormone health, allergies, sleep issues, etc. the best starting place is often digestion.
Simply working on this ONE foundation of breaking down and absorbing food has the power to bring our entire bodies back into balance.
So, where should we start?
How to optimize digestion:
For many people, it’s as simple as:
- Eating easier to digest foods like roots, fruits and gelatinous cuts of meat to give the gut time to heal.
- Taking digestive bitters to tell the body it's time to digest.
- Adding in gelatin or bone broth daily to seal the gut.
But, digestion has several phases...which can complicate things a bit.
The cephalic phase occurs in the mouth.
The gastric phase in the stomach.
The intestinal phase in the small and large intestines.
The place to start healing for everyone is different.
One way I help my clients see where they should start is by completing a Nutritional Assessment Questionnaire (NAQ).
